These 6 Waarggiies are a creative response to an interior design request for six images that will be displayed in a hallway for a newly renovated home in Sydney’s Paddington. This hallway was all in all quite bright, particularly in the day with its white walls and a small skylight. Because of this I wanted a visual outcome that didn’t detract from the feeling of walking though a light, minimal, and contemporary space, but also something that met the client’s needs; to create a touch of personality humor and interest. To do this I needed a concept. I looked for inspiration in nature.
A single leaf holds amazingly sublime complexity, (just go on find one, they are wonderfully amazing things) but at first glance a leaf can also look quite simple. A leafs balance between its complex body and simple outline; I believe is a work of mother natures art. I found that leaves also have a strange and fascinating way of seemlessly fitting into each other, and I've got to say that arranging these leaves into little waargies (and finding material right down to some swift maneuvers in The Botanical Garden's) was a completely enjoyable and calming experience. The real difficulty was in finding an appropriate background for these surreal little creatures, so I started playing with an open space of colour and tweaking its gradient till the space held the waargie comfortably, something you could do for a very
long time.
If you’re wondering what the black shapes are in middle of the Waarggiies - then good for you... Apart from creating balance and character, I think they are a doorway into the universe of "The Waarggii", they have also been seen as orifices of some description...
